motoq.jpg

This incredibly thin smartphone is a head-turner wherever it goes thanks to its sleek, lightweight design. You’ll be amazed at how much functionality is packed into the 0.45 inch thin design. Like a full QWERTY keyboard with backlit keys, 5-way navigation button and a thumbwheel for single-handed control.

The MOTOQ™ keeps pace with your busy lifestyle and work schedule. With customizable settings and a full range of multimedia and productivity capabilities to boost your product. Best of all, the MOTOQ™ brings you a phone experience far superior to any QWERTY smartphone or PDA. Crisp, clear voice capability, advanced speech recognition, and easy-to-use navigation features make it easy for you to stay in peak performance on the go.

Price Range: $399.99  - 419.99

Would there have been so much hype about the Motorola Q if it didn’t rock such a sleek design? Probably not. The Q’s form factor is a huge–if not the main–drawing point of the device. Modeled after the Motorola Razr V3, the Q measures a slim 4.57 by 2.52 by 0.47 inches and is actually thinner than the Razr. It easily slips into a shirt or a pants pocket, and ladies, the Q certainly won’t demand too much space in your purse. The overall construction is solid, and it feels good in the hands, but if you haven’t used this type of convergence device before, you might have to go through a period of adjustment to get used to the extra width, as well as holding it up to your ear as a phone.

The QVGA display is very nice and bright when used indoors. Pretty much anyone who handled the Moto Q praised the screen quality. In direct sunlight, however, the readability comes down by a lot. That’s unfortunate because it’s really sunny in California but to be fair, the smart phone competition isn’t performing any better. Curiously, my Sony Ericsson T610’s display beats them all. Go figure.

The Screen is not a touch screen, which is a little disturbing at first if you’re used to have poke the display with your finger. After a couple of days, I just got used to it, and it became non-issue. During our tests, we found that we used mainly the phone, text messaging and web browsing applications, none of which requires the touch screen.

Price Range: $360 - $389

Adorning the left side of the phone is a scrollwheel that can be used to navigate the MPx200’s menus or to adjust the volume while on a call. There’s also an on/off button and an IR port. On the right-hand side, you’ll find the aforementioned SD/MMC expansion slot (sorry, no SDIO support) and a headset jack. No card comes with the phone, but you’ll probably want to purchase one with at least 128MB of memory.

As is standard on the MS Smartphone platform, the MPx200 has a 176×220 resolution display. The unit supports 65k colors and is of the much preferred TFT variety. It is both large and easy to view, better than the displays I saw on the first SPV and the Compal Avenger reference design. The external sub-display is a simple monochrome type, something I much prefer due to their being both easier to read without a backlight and wasting less battery energy. There are multiple styles of faces for the external LCD, including a digital clock and an analog clock with a calendar, which is quite nice. You’ve perhaps heard some rumblings that the sub-display is incapable of showing caller ID names, but this is not accurate. The display can and does show the name of contacts that call you, but it does seem to be a bit slow in doing so at times - perhaps being related to the total number of contacts and numbers in the device. I don’t know for sure.

Motorola have certainly done something different with the looks of the MPx200, and everyone we showed it to expressed the view that it is not only very good looking but also exceedingly well built. The clamshell handset is finished in glossy black plastic, with other portions in dark grey - nice, but difficult to keep clean. The front of the unit features an external screen surrounded by metallic blue and chromed highlights. Overall, the MPx200 strikes us as a high-quality item.

Motorola A840

a840.jpg

This handset has incredible reach to almost any corner of the globe. You can travel from the US to Europe to China yet never lose touch with colleagues, friends, or family. Think of it as ‘extreme global communications. The new mobile is packaged in a stylish clamshell design with an integrated MP3 player, removable Trans-Flash memory, large 2.2-inch brilliant color display speaker-independent speech recognition, compelling gaming experience, and 1.2 megapixel integrated camera to guarantee that your free time is as exhilarating, entertaining, and easy whether you’re home or on the other end of the globe.

In general the physical build of the A840 is good. The curves of the handset are rather pleasant to look at and the construction of the phone feels very solid and well put together. The buttons on the side of the chassis are a little difficult to push but this is a good design feature as they are less likely to be pushed by accident while the phone is travelling in your pocket.

Motorola E680i

e680i.jpg

Far better looking than the previous models, the E680i appears both smaller and sleeker than its predecessor - a result of the visual illusion as the difference in size is marginal. There are however several other quite tangible differences, coincidentally leaving a larger area of the screen exposed; overall improved build quality and ergonomics; and some weight loss.Weighing in at 133 grams and measuring 53 x 109 x 20 mm, it’s compact ad powerful for its size.A perfectly adequate 65,000-color display is bright and crisp, and is a far step above the dim 4096-color versions on even the most recent Motorola models. The display resolution 240 x 320 pixel ideal for small and smart phone.

Audio quality on the E680i was crystal clear, and signal quality was good. The removable 700 mAh Li-ion battery is rated for 3 hours talk time or 180 hours standby, which is quite low given the battery’s theoretical capacity. Charge time is about 105 minutes.

The E680i packs all the standard PIM functions you will find in most PDA-phones, from a calendar organizer to voice recording to an email client, thus making it a fairly decent mobile office tool. With GPRS Class 10, WAP 2.0, an internal modem, Bluetooth and USB functionality, you can easily stay connected anytime, anywhere. The infrared port, which is fast becoming obsolete, has been removed. As with the E680, it can also function as a portable storage device.
