Motorola V80

Price Range: $190.35 to $190.35

The screen on the V80 is very good. It’s a bright TFT display with 65,000 colours and is very large at 176 x 200 pixels, making full use of the opportunity that the rotating design offers. The integrated camera is also high quality, and there are plenty of tools and options to play with. Light condition settings consist of: Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Indoor and Night. There’s an auto timer and a choice of landscape or portrait mode. The digital zoom goes up to 4x, but image quality degrades when zoomed this much. There’s no video camera, but video playback (with sound) is possible.

Looking at Motorola V80 you will probably think of words like “style” and “flair”. A shiny black egg with a quality display on the upper side is trimmed around by a matte silver color. A thick silver frame in matte and shiny shade highlights the display itself. Above the display stands the joystick’s green “eye” surrounded by three chrome function keys, set up in a ring form. The bright green color of the joystick lightens up the otherwise black-silver handset. On the opposite side beside the display you can find an oval small chrome frame of the speaker, slightly embedded.

Rather than adopting a standard design, Motorola have blessed the V80 with a rotating mechanism only previously seen on the V70. Simply put, a screen layer rotates around the central joystick to reveal the numeric keypad layer underneath. When closed, therefore, the top face holds simply the navigation joystick, speaker and the huge screen, which offers an impressive view at an excellent resolution of 176 x 220, complete with 16-bit colour.

Motorola V70

v70.jpg

This is a one of a kind cell phone with a real novelty in terms of looks. Everybody, even my most blasé friends, were amazed at how it looks, the great blue backlight and the cover that unfolds sideways. Apart from that, the Motorola V70 is quite similar to most recent Motorola cell phones. A good phonebook system with memory for 1000 names!, a melody composer (limited but handy), excellent sound quality and a small size and weight.

This small beauty has got a sharp memory and is able to remember up to 500 different contacts with the ability to retain multiple numbers for each contact. This is other than the memory offered by the SIM card. The phone also possesses storage capacity for 64 ringtones of which 32 are standard and the other 32 are custom. Features include Calculator with the ability of currency conversions; calendar to store important meetings / dates / appointments even the odd elusive anniversary and birthday. The alarm reminders are a part of calendar and date book feature ensuring you never forget an entry once made in the calendar/date book. Customized faceplates make the phone look even sexier than it already is. Ringtones can also be customized i.e. either downloaded or created by the user himself via the built-in composer.

To make a call, you rotate the cover 180 degrees and expose the V70’s blue-backlit keypad. The phone takes on a candy bar-style look and feel that’s fairly comfortable to talk on for long periods of time. True, the keys are a tad small and may not appeal to those with larger fingers, but we didn’t suffer any misdials. However, we had a little trouble pressing the two-button, rockerlike, internal-navigation key since it was so closely located to the LCD’s edge. Conversely, we didn’t have any difficulties with the identical rocker key found on the outside of the phone that’s used to navigate menus when the keypad is covered.
