Adorning the left side of the phone is a scrollwheel that can be used to navigate the MPx200’s menus or to adjust the volume while on a call. There’s also an on/off button and an IR port. On the right-hand side, you’ll find the aforementioned SD/MMC expansion slot (sorry, no SDIO support) and a headset jack. No card comes with the phone, but you’ll probably want to purchase one with at least 128MB of memory.
As is standard on the MS Smartphone platform, the MPx200 has a 176×220 resolution display. The unit supports 65k colors and is of the much preferred TFT variety. It is both large and easy to view, better than the displays I saw on the first SPV and the Compal Avenger reference design. The external sub-display is a simple monochrome type, something I much prefer due to their being both easier to read without a backlight and wasting less battery energy. There are multiple styles of faces for the external LCD, including a digital clock and an analog clock with a calendar, which is quite nice. You’ve perhaps heard some rumblings that the sub-display is incapable of showing caller ID names, but this is not accurate. The display can and does show the name of contacts that call you, but it does seem to be a bit slow in doing so at times - perhaps being related to the total number of contacts and numbers in the device. I don’t know for sure.
Motorola have certainly done something different with the looks of the MPx200, and everyone we showed it to expressed the view that it is not only very good looking but also exceedingly well built. The clamshell handset is finished in glossy black plastic, with other portions in dark grey - nice, but difficult to keep clean. The front of the unit features an external screen surrounded by metallic blue and chromed highlights. Overall, the MPx200 strikes us as a high-quality item.
