Motorola V710

v710.jpg

The Motorola V710’s clamshell design has many similarities to its predecessors. The two-toned stylish and refined appearance measures 94 x 49 x 23 mm and weighs approximately 4 ounces; large enough to text message conveniently while small enough to comfortably fit in pockets.

The 4-ounce V710 is a sizable (3.7 by 1.9 by 0.9 inches HWD) flip-phone with a sleek businesslike look. For voice calling, it’s great. Calls made from it sounded good on the receiving end, and the speakerphone is loud and clear, though we wish the ear speaker was louder. We’re also glad to see that this phone includes an analog band, which lets it get calls in rural areas where digital-only phones can’t find a signal. All GSM phones and many new CDMA phones lack analog altogether.

Physically, the V710 stacks up quite a bit like its elder brother, the V600. Coming in at 130.2g, it is only a wee bit more than 3 grams heavier than the GSM V600. It is also a couple of millimeters wider and longer, but the same thickness. So it isn’t a fly-weight, micro handset, for sure, but it still feels appropriate. No sense that it is a toy. The two-tone silver/gray body with metal and chrome highlights is rock solid. It feels as if it will last a while, which is what you want, of course.

Data features, on the other hand, were beyond frustrating and completely undermine the V710’s appeal. Though Bluetooth may be the handset’s star attraction, its integration and limited usefulness left us wondering why it was included at all. You can use it to connect with a Bluetooth headset but not to sync with a PC or to transfer pictures, MP3s, your contacts, or any applications. And since there’s no infrared port, you’re left either paying for Verizon’s Get It Now service or using Motorola’s Mobile Office Kit (available from Verizon for $39.99) or a TransFlash card ($30 to $40). Verizon said it limited the Bluetooth functionality to protect security agreements with its Get It Now partners. It promises a software upgrade in the future but only for address book syncing.
